How to Prepare for the Tooth Fairy’s First Visit

May 28, 2021

If you’re a new parent and your little one is reaching the age of six, it might be time to start preparing for the tooth fairy’s visit. Creating excitement around this tradition can actually encourage good oral health! Us dentists love the tooth fairy – she’s a good friend of ours. Here’s how to create some excitement around the tooth fairy’s first visit.

Get your story straight

If your child has a loose tooth, they may start asking about the tooth fairy. They might be aware of the general idea but will probably be asking why this tooth fairy wants children’s discarded baby teeth. So make sure to get your details straight! Some legends include a fairy palace made of teeth (a little weird), some involve giving lost teeth to new babies, and some tie the whole thing to dental hygiene (our favorite) – giving payment for healthy teeth and leaving notes to encourage good habits. Make sure you decide which story to stick with!

Payment

Tooth fairies these days are giving anywhere from a quarter to $5 (averaging around a dollar) Once you decide what will be found under their pillow (a gold dollar coin or a two-dollar bill are kind of unique and fun) you can think of other details.

Presentation

Once you’ve decided on your compensation, jazz them up! Adding glitter makes money look very magical. Perhaps leave a note on a tiny piece of paper – in your best cursive – because fairies are fancy! You can even leave fairy footprints or a glitter trail leading up to your child’s bed.

The Receipt

If you want to be super adorable, you can leave a glitter-covered tooth receipt. Click here to download our tooth fairy receipt!

The Tooth Container

You might decide to buy a special tooth fairy container so your child’s tiny tooth doesn’t slip under the pillow or get lost. It can be any small container, or even a bag hanging from a bedpost or nightstand.

We hope you have fun with your child’s first tooth fairy visit. We’ve heard a lot of cute stories from our little patients! If you’d like to learn more tips, we’ll share more on our Instagram page.
