Looking for orthodontics for yourself or your teen? The more you research, the more options you discover, and that’s great! But, it can be overwhelming. If you’re looking for discreet treatment options, both Invisalign and Clear Braces make your appliances less noticeable, but there are important differences between them. When making your decision, consider these factors and whether or not you’ll even be a candidate for Invisalign.
Our Orthodontist in Newport Beach can determine if you’re better suited for Invisalign or Clear Braces. We can also discuss your personal preferences, budget limitations, and long-term goals in order to come to the best decision.
Clear Braces Are Better for More Severe Orthodontic Issues
Invisalign has come a long way in terms of the depth and breadth of issues the aligners can fix. For example, in recent years, Invisalign has added attachments to better shift misaligned, over spaced, and overcrowded teeth. However, braces still have a leg-up in terms of the severity of the issues they can address.
For example, braces are better for patients with:
- Crossbites
- Open bites
- Severe malocclusions
- Severe overcrowding
- Large spaces
While Invisalign can use rubber bands to correct misaligned bites just like braces can, they have limited effectiveness for anything beyond mild to moderate issues according to the Journal of Dental Sciences and the National Institute of Health.
Invisalign is Typically Preferable for Convenience
While your personal preference may differ, many people choose Invisalign for the relative ease and convenience of treatment. Not only are the aligners difficult to spot while you’re wearing them, but they are:
- Removable
- Comfortable
- Unrestrictive
- Easy to maintain
With braces, care and maintenance can be difficult. It’s not always easy to brush and floss between and around the brackets. Aligners can be taken out and washed in third-party appliances or brushed like normal. Plus, you can’t eat whatever you want when you’re wearing braces, as some foods may damage your brackets or teeth.
Invisalign Often Takes Less Time, Costing You Less Money
Aligners cost more than braces on the front end; however, Invisalign treatment typically takes less time to complete than braces. While this requires less of an investment over time, this may not be something you can control by simply choosing the faster option. Typically, Invisalign results in shorter treatment times, but it’s also reserved for less severe issues.
Simply put, if you have severe bite or alignment issues, your treatment will take more time no matter which option you choose. If you decide to start with Invisalign even with major bite issues, you may end up in braces anyway.
