Traditional Braces, Clear Braces, and Space Maintainers

Traditional Braces, Clear Braces, and Space Maintainers in Newport Beach, CA

Are you a parent? If so, it’s time to consider dental care for your little ones! Whether they are still teething or their permanent teeth have emerged, now is the perfect time to start considering traditional braces, clear braces, or space maintainers for your children. As parents, we want what’s best for our kids, and healthy teeth are essential for any child’s development.

That said, kids aren’t the only patient population that we treat. Dr. William Waite is eager to assist if you’re over 18 and interested in bettering your dental alignment with traditional braces, clear braces, or an alternative orthodontic treatment. At Hersch Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics, Dr. Waite wants individuals to receive the orthodontic treatment needed to achieve a more optimized dental alignment.

How Do braces work?

Braces have been the go-to orthodontic treatment for generations, and it’s not hard to see why. Not only are braces incredibly effective at correcting crooked or crowded teeth, but they’re also simple to maintain. After each appointment with your orthodontist, you’ll leave with a slightly different look as the metal braces adapt and reshape your smile bit by bit.

Dr. Waite offers two forms of braces at our Newport Beach orthodontic office:

  • Traditional Braces: These metal braces consist of metal brackets that are securely applied to each tooth needing correction. Then, a metal wire is used to hold the brackets together. The metal wire can also create tension on the teeth, allowing them to slowly move into a more desirable position over months (and sometimes years).

  • Clear Braces: This style of braces is a less noticeable alternative to traditional metal braces. Aside from discreet aesthetics, clear braces are metal-free and made from tooth-colored ceramic (polycrystalline alumina) that helps the appliance blend in with the teeth.

What Is A Space Maintainer?

As parents, we expect our children’s baby teeth to fall out as their adult teeth start to come in. But what should you do if one of your children’s teeth comes out a little too soon? Pediatric space maintainers are the ideal solution for premature tooth loss. A space maintainer is a combination of bands and wires designed to hold the remaining teeth in a position that will allow the future permanent tooth to erupt in the proper location and with adequate space.

Immediate placement of fixed space maintainers gives the erupting permanent tooth a fighting chance to erupt in the proper location and minimize orthodontic issues caused by premature tooth loss (such as overcrowding). Alternatively, if teeth space maintainers are not placed in time, the teeth will naturally shift into the open area. This natural consequence makes it difficult (or sometimes impossible for a permanent tooth to erupt), thus requiring more extensive orthodontic treatment.
